What to Expect at Your First Dental Visit in Puchong

A first dental visit takes about 30 to 45 minutes. It covers a medical history, a full examination of your teeth, gums, bite and soft tissues, X-rays if needed, and a discussion of what we found. Nothing is treated on the first visit unless you are in pain and want it dealt with.

Key takeaways

  • The first visit is an assessment, not a treatment session. You are not committed to anything.
  • Bring a list of your medications and any previous X-rays if you have them.
  • You will leave with a written plan and a clear idea of costs before anything is booked.
  • Tell us if you are nervous. It genuinely changes how we run the appointment.
  • Allow a little extra time for the paperwork on your first visit.

Before you arrive

There is not much to prepare, but a few things help:

  • A list of your medications, including supplements. Several common medications cause dry mouth, which substantially changes decay risk, and blood thinners change how we approach certain procedures.
  • Any relevant medical conditions — diabetes, heart conditions, joint replacements, pregnancy, or anything you are currently being treated for.
  • Previous X-rays, if you have them from another clinic. They give us a baseline and may save you a new set.
  • A note of what is bothering you, if anything. It is surprisingly easy to forget the specific tooth once you are in the chair.

You do not need to do anything special to your teeth beforehand. Brush as normal. There is no need to make a special effort to impress us, and honestly, we can tell.

Arriving at the clinic

Come five to ten minutes early on a first visit for the registration form — contact details, medical history, and how you heard about us. Our reception team will take you through it if anything is unclear.

We are on the first floor at Jalan Putra Impiana 1, Taman Putra Impiana, in Puchong South. There is free parking outside. If you are coming from Bandar Puteri, Bandar Kinrara or Puchong Jaya it is a short drive, and reception can talk you in if you get lost.

The examination

We start by talking rather than looking. What brought you in, what your dental history has been like, whether previous experiences have been difficult, and whether anything hurts right now. This part is not filler — it changes how the rest of the appointment runs.

Then the examination itself, which covers four areas:

  • Teeth — decay, cracks, wear, and the condition of any existing fillings or crowns.
  • Gums — bleeding, recession, and the depth of the crevice around each tooth.
  • Bite — how your teeth meet, and whether wear patterns suggest grinding.
  • Soft tissues — tongue, cheeks, palate and floor of the mouth.

If X-rays are needed we will explain why before taking them. On a first visit they are common, simply because there is no history to compare against and a third of decay starts in places that cannot be seen directly.

Discussing what we found

This is the part of the appointment that matters most, and we do not rush it. You should leave understanding three things: what is going on, what needs doing, and in what order.

We separate findings deliberately into what needs treatment now, what should be planned but is not urgent, and what we will simply monitor and re-photograph next visit. Not everything found at an examination needs treating, and we would rather tell you that than propose work on every finding.

Costs are discussed at the same time. You should never be in a position of agreeing to treatment without knowing what it will cost — if a figure cannot be confirmed until something is opened up, we will say so and give you the range.

If you are nervous

Tell us at the start, or when you book. It is extremely common and it is not something to feel awkward about. Practically, it changes several things: we go more slowly, explain each step before doing it, agree a stop signal, and we will not do treatment on a first visit unless you want us to.

If a previous experience was genuinely bad, say so. Knowing what went wrong last time helps us avoid repeating it, and it is usually something specific and avoidable rather than dentistry in general.

What we will not do: pressure you into same-day treatment, present a large plan without explaining the reasoning behind each item, or proceed with anything before you have agreed to it and know the cost. A first visit is an assessment. You are entitled to take the plan away and think about it.

What happens next

If nothing needs doing, we will set a recall interval based on your risk and see you then. If treatment is needed, reception books the next appointment and, where the plan is longer, we sequence it so the most urgent work comes first.

If you are in pain when you arrive, that changes the order of everything. We will address the pain first and do the full assessment once you are comfortable.

Frequently asked questions

What should I bring to my first dental visit?

A list of your medications and supplements, details of any medical conditions, previous X-rays if you have them from another clinic, and a note of anything that has been bothering you.

How long does a first dental appointment take?

About 30 to 45 minutes. Arrive five to ten minutes early to complete the registration form. A first visit takes longer than a routine review because a full baseline record is being created.

Will I get treatment on my first visit?

Not usually. The first visit is an assessment, and you leave with a written plan and costs. The exception is if you arrive in pain, in which case we deal with the pain first and complete the assessment once you are comfortable.

Will I need X-rays at my first visit?

Often yes, because there is no previous history to compare against and about a third of decay starts between teeth where it cannot be seen directly. We will always explain why before taking any.

What if I am nervous about seeing a dentist?

Tell us when you book or at the start of the appointment. We go more slowly, explain each step before doing it, agree a stop signal, and will not carry out treatment on a first visit unless you want us to.
